Watch it closely: If there is no pigmented residue left now, you can watch it closely in order to find out if it will recur locally. If it was melanoma, it will show up locally again. But it is unlikely to be a melanoma as they do not fall off that easily without leaving a pigmented residue behind. Just keep an eye on it for the next several months. If it does not come back you should be fine and not have to worry.

Biopsy: Biopsy of site is gold standard of diagnosing or ruling out most pathology. For pigmented lesions a personal and family history is important as well as a complete examination including lymph node drainage areas. Some pigmented lesions can lose color and that also is an indication for biopsy.
