Heat and stretches: People often get muscle spasms in the neck. It is helpful to apply heat and do gentle stretches. Massage and antiinflammatories could also give you some relief. If it is persistant a doctor can prescribe muscle relaxers. Make sure you stay well hydrated and get adequate rest.

Pain-spasm: Usually muscle spasm in the neck starts with pain from injury. The spasm is the body's attempt to immobilize the area. As metabolites of muscle contraction accumulate in the area they contribute to more soreness which elicits more spasm. Medications or treatments are aimed at alleviating pain and relaxing spasm. Analgesics, muscle relaxants, massage, relaxation techniques.
