No Battling!: Battling with children to eat just makes the problem worse. It is a fight you can't win. Hands off approach works much better. Child will eat when he or she is hungry. Most kids his age will gor 3 to 4 days picking and than eat one meal. Take advantage when he is hungry but dont fight when he isnt. This is more of a parent problem than a kid problem. Kid will be fine.

Find his likes: Selective appetite is something you can work with in an 8 yo. He is old enough to understand basic reasoning and a trip to the store to select his choice of a realistic food may be the thing that works. I find something like lean pockets is attractive and acceptable to kids this age.The mom needs to be on board with some positive outcomes if he complies with her breakfast mandate.
