Yes: Brushing too hard will irritate the fragile tissue around the teeth, causing the gum and bone to shrink away.

Yes: Brushing too hard with your toothbrush; orthodontic movement; some studies suggest grinding your teeth can influence gum recession; and then there are some that have receeding gums and we don't know why.

Yes: Use only a soft tooth brush in gentle circular motion at a 45 degree angle where the gums meet the tooth. It should take you about 2 minutes to brush and floss all your teeth.
