Possible: Osteomielitis it is a severe infection of the bone. This can lead to sepsis which has a very high mortality rate.

The bone infection : Will likely affect the bone, the problem is the infection can make the person sick. If it is any consolation i treat many people with osteomyelitis of the feet. Many are diabetic. None have died from the osteomyelitis. Many may have had parts of the feet removed but none died directly from the bone infection. It is usually from the comorbidity they die from. I.E bad heart etc.
