See orthopod: Bone chip fractures occur after severe sprains, when a fragment of the bone is broken off, usually meaning ligament or tendon loose from the bone tearing a piece of bone with it. The treatment for an avulsion fracture usually involves having the affected joint placed in a cast to immobilize it and allow healing, over a period of several weeks. Physical therapy usually follows. Consult othopod.

Recent injury?: With out recent history of trauma (ankle twist) and know history of multiple prior ankle injuries, you may be referring to something known as a 'joint mouse' or a chip of bone floating within a joint space. Symptomatic osteophytes often require surgical intervention, it's size and location will determine the level of invasiveness- orthoscopic vs. Open.

Surgery: Is an option for a chip fracture or joint mice. Can be done if you are in constant pain, either open or arthroscopic surgery. Try all conservative options first.
