No one answer that: Except the doc who is doing your biopsy that doc can give u odds based on what the mammogram showed but the final result will be the biopsy which your doc should go over the results with u as soon as it is back.

But...: It is 100% certain that you are doing the right thing in having the biopsy, and it is very probable that having found the mass when you did gives you much better odds than if you had delayed. Keep this thought, and the things you want to do with the rest of your life, at the forefront as you face this challenge.

What are the different possible results of a breast biopsy?

Good/Bad/Uncertain: Statistically-speaking, most breast biopsies are benign, requiring no further rx. Of course, the purpose of the biopsy is to be certain that no cancer is present; unfortunately, this is found 15-30% of the time. Sometimes, the pathologists will need more tissue to be certain, leading to performance of a surgical biopsy; happily, this is the exception rather than the rule. Good luck!

What are common breast biopsy results?

Dr. Laurentia Nodit
Pathology 27 years experience
Benign: A biopsy is usually triggered by a clinically detected lesion/mass or an abnormal finding (calcification) identified on a screening mammogram. While many biopsies are benign, cancer is also detected. Benign lesions are fibrocystic changes, fibroadenomas, silicone granuloma, fat necrosis. Malignant breast tumors are usually ductal or lobular carcinoma, whereas other tumors are rare.

Reliability of breast biopsy result?

Dr. Stephen Berns

Highly reliable: This is the most accurate test that is diagnostic for breast cancer. Mammograms, ultrasounds, and mris of the breast may be highly suggestive of a malignancy, but they are not diagnostic.
