A member asked:

My mum has calcifications in one of her breasts and she had a biopsy and getting the results back soon. what are the chances of them being cancer? :(

It depends.: Large calcifications are usually benign, but microcalcifications clustered in one region are more likely to be associated with breast cancer. Best wishes to you and to her.

Breast calcification: Calcifications in breast tissue are NOT always cancerous but sometimes help to show up an area that is - were they rounded or spiculated?? Spiculated (or spiked) ones are usually not a good finding. Additionally the tissue should have been x-ray'ed to make sure all of the calcifications seen were removed. She will need close followup if benign.

Microcalcifications: The chance of cancer depends on the shape and distribution of the calcs, which should be described in the report. Additionally, a BIRADS code should be assigned at the end of the report which is based on the chance of malignancy. The fact that there is a biopsy means there is at least a 3% chance of cancer. In general, of all bx for all varieties of calcs, approx 80% turn out benign
