Transfusion: As is the answer of most questions in medicine, you must fix the underlying disorder, whatever that might be. Having said that, if a quick fix is required, ususally a transfusion of platelets is needed.

transfusion will not be a good treatment for condition like thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura ( TTP). it would be contraindicated to give platelet transfusion in TTP.

Depends on the cause: Treatment will depend on the cause of thrombocytopenia. For many causes like infection/sepsis/dic, drugs, autoimmune related etc- the fastest would be platelet transfusion-but- that would not be the best. The best would be to address the cause itself. For certain condition like ttp- platelet transfusion would be absolutely contraindicated-and plasma exchange would be the best and the fastest tx.

Depends on cause: Tcp can be increased distruction in a transient post infectious event in kids, a sign of bone marrow invasion by a leukemia, increased use in an infectious process etc. Treatment requires a proper evaluation and identification of the process involved.Occasionally transfusion of pooled platelets are given & some meds may be helpful. This is a complex issue.

What's the cause?: This can be due to anything from drinking quinine bitters to having leukemia or cancer in the marrow to any of a variety of other things. It is not an illness on itself.
