A 37-year-old member asked:

What is the treatment for thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura?

Plasma transfusion: Ttp is due to deficiency of an enzyme normally present in blood. This enzyme controls the activation of platelets. The deficient enzyme is usually replaced by transfusing plasma and in severe cases by exchanging the patient's plasma with normal plasma.

Abnormal platelet: Function due to deficiency of a metaloproteinase. Deficiency, usually acquired, of an enzyme that breaks down large multimers of von willebrand factor causes overactivation of platelets leading to intravascular microthrombi that affect the functions of the kidneys, brain, lungs and other organs. It can be treated by transfusing normal donor plasma.
