A member asked:

Off and on mild thrombocytopenia and mild acidosis w/o treatment ( prob. due to lack of severity?), as well as ongoing macrocytosis for approximately 3 years. are these correlated somehow? in regards to macrocytosis, folate is fine, b12 mid-low end.

Possibly related: Your underlying disorders may be related to on off mild acidosis, but the hematologic sign of low platelets has been described as a drug side effect particularly Topamax (topiramate). Macrocytosis of long duration needs to be further investigated as your stated Folate B12 values are only a few of the possible causes of large red blood cells, and may include anemia of chronic disease, stem cell defect, etcSeeMD

Hematological issues: You presented a few hematologist issues which are usually not directly connected. You should really locate the hematology maven in your neighborhood, NOT the oncologist. Do your work up with that person. At some point you may need to get a bone marrow exam.

Hematologist: Alcohol intake can cause macrocytosis and if this doesn't pertain to you, I feel that your borderline B12 level should be raised with therapeutic amounts of B12 preferably by a series of injections. Your hematologist who knows all your findings, is best qualified to advise and treat you, however.
