Slow progression: Barrett's esophagus is when cells of the lower esophagus began to change because of ongoing injury. Related to chronic acid reflux disease from the stomach. Can lead to cancer. Patients with this condition are placed on acid reducing medications; may require a surgery to stop the reflux. Alcohol is uncommon cause. You should have endoscopy routinely to follow it. Progression to cancer not rapid.
