Barretts esophagus: Barretts can be a fast growing tumor and the treatment even at early stages includes resection. The resection can be dangerous because it interferes with respiratory function and may lead to an early death. Stop smoking and see a surgeon asap.

Slow Progression: Barretts is a slow progression to cancer. By the way, congradulations on stopping smoking and making yourself healthier. It is usually harder to quit smoking than drinking so your next step should be easier.

No cancer guarentee: Barrett's is a cellular change that is associated with an increased risk of lower esophageal cancer. It is not for certain that you will develop cancer. Stopping smoking is huge. Alcohol also makes things worse. Medication to reduce acid production or surgery to prevent reflux may be helpful.
