Benzodiazepine Abuse: People who use benzodiazepines find that after a while they need to use more, their body accommodates to the effect, but not the side effects. Some of these patients have chronic pain and are using narcotic pain medications. Like many patients they have a few drinks at a party, become drunk and may not remember what they are doing, drink more, take more pills, and die from respiratory arrest.

Depends: Benzodiazepine abuse can lead to death primarily through (1) accidents secondary to cognitive and/or motor impairment, or (2) overdose when combined with other medications. Deaths from benzodiazepine-only overdoses are rare; most fatalities involving benzodiazepines involve other substances, most notably opiates.
