More than Rx'd: Benzo abuse is when a person takes more than the prescribed amount of medication in order to get the same effect they were once having. The most abusable benzodiazepine is xanax (alprazolam). Often this happens when people take the medication over the long term and develop a tolerance. It may be part of an addiction as well. Work with your doctor to safely get off the medication.

Addictive disorder: Even when used properly, long-term benzodiazepine use will lead to tolerance such that higher doses will be necessary to achieve the same anti-anxiety effect. This situation should not be confused with benzodiazepine abuse, where one is taking extra amounts of benzodiazepines in order to achieve a "high" or euphoria. Xanax (alprazolam) is the benzodiazepine most often abused as it can produce a high.
