Painful tongue: Frist how long has it lasted? Is it sharp or ache? Several possiblities could be trigeminal neuralgia, glossophayngeal neuralgia, or possibly even cancer in the base of the tongue. You should have it checked out immediately by your dentist or oral surgeon to rule out these differentials.
