Bad: Basically the clot that was supposed to form after tooth extraction is either never formed or removed....Both usually due to improper care. It's the exposure of bone and great pain follows. http://www.animated-teeth.com/dry-sockets/a1-dry-sockets.htm should help you with all the info.

Bacterial infection.: Dry sockets occur due to a bacterial invasion of the tooth socket before the skin can migrate over it. It leaves the socket raw and exposed giving a pain not unlike a broken bone exposed through the skin. Avoid the issue by lowering your preoperative oral bacteria count by flossing daily for a month and possibly taking preoperative antibiotics. Prevent the infection to minimize the post-op pain.
