Things to avoid: Dry sockets most commonly occur with the removal of teeth in the lower jaw. Smoking, vigorous rinsing, spitting and smoking are things you should try to avoid during the first 24 hours after surgery. Patients who are on birth control may be at a greater risk for dry sockets as well.

Minimal: The risk of dry socket is very low as along as you follow your doctor's after care instructions. Avoid, smoking, spitting and sucking on straws for at least 3 days. Contact your dentist with any questions.
