Intense pain: A dry socket is when the healing blood clot is lost and the bone of the tooth socket is exposed. It typically happens 3 or 4 days after an extraction. Dry socket is very painful and needs treatment by the dentist that did the extraction. So. Don't hesitate to call the dentist or oral surgeon.

A hole in bone: A dry socket is where you loose the blood clot in the hole where the tooth was extracted. The blood doesn't come back, so you have exposed bone. There is typically a smell and the pain doesn't go away, if anything it gets worse.
