Dry Socket: Early in the healing phase, a clot forms within the surgical site. This clot plays an important role in initiating the necessary steps of healing. For this reason, we suggest you protect this clot by refraining from drinking through a straw which can dislodge the clot; or refrain from smoking which can delay healing. Dry socket occurs when the clot or later steps of healing are interrupted.
