Follow instructions: Follow the post-op instructions of your dentist. Typically this means no rinsing, sucking through a straw or spitting out for the first 24 hours. Also avoid eating hard foods in that area for at least one week. Brush and floss gently in the area until the socket closes. Do not smoke for at least 3-4 days following the extraction.

Dry Socket: The absolute best way to prevent dry socket is by not creating negative pressure in your mouth. Use of a straw and smoking anything will pull on the healing clot, disloging it creating a dry, or empty socket. Also do not rinse your mouth the day of he extraction. After 24 hours rinse gently and often with warm not hot salt water. This will really speed up healing, and help clense the site.
