Certain situations: Reasons to drain a hematoma might include enlarging size that suggests ongoing bleeding, infection, compression of adjacent structures, or external bleeding. If none of these are present, the hematoma will get reabsorbed over time on its own. Speak with your surgeon if you are concerned about it.
