TMJ: When you open your mouth wide and have pain, this could be a sign of TMJ (jaw joint) pain/inflammation. Often this pain is felt in the ear. A soft diet and nsaids (ibuprofen) can help. If it gets worse, see an oral surgeon or ENT doctor to confirm the diagnosis.

Yawning & TMJ Pain: On maximal range of motion opening, patients sometimes can have "over translation" of the TMJ and this can result in an audible pop or click (actually anywhere within the rotational or translational period) or a brief burst of pain varying in intensity. This doesn't mean that you have a pathologic condition within one TMJ and should not be of too much concern unless it occurs with normal function.
