Did it work?: If the ointment cleared up the area without there being infection it should not be a problem. It is highly unlikely to be toxic in any way. Your doctor simply had samples and forgot to check the expiration date, or the drug rep gave them outdated samples.

Expired : A product loses its effectiveness after the expiration date. One should contact the physician for a recommendation as to what product should be applied to a healing wound. For example, a topical antibacterial or vaseline to name a couple of possibilities.
