What different options for having a gallbladder removed are out there?

Basically two: If you need to have cholecystectomy: laparoscopic or open. These days, laparoscopic surgery is the much preferred method and can be done with minimum pain, scarring, and hospital care.

Standard approach: is the laparoscopic cholecystectomy, which uses small incisions and long instruments to remove the gallbladder. Removal of the GB is the only way to get rid of stones and assoc pain for good. There are meds to suppress gallstones, but they are expensive and when stopped the stones/symptoms can recur. Meds are not first line treatment. See a surgeon to discuss your options. Good luck.
