Gallbladder disease: Difficult to answer stated this way. Before dr. Evarts graham developed 1st diagnostic test for gallbladder dz, oral cholecystogram mid 1930's, gallbladder dz was on top 10 list for cause of death in U.S.A. Gallbladder dz remains on this list for several countries where gallbladder surgery is limited, but not in U.S.A. The gallbladder is not essential organ. Okay to have it removed when diseased.

I went to the ER for severe pain due to gallbladder sludge. Doc said sludge is extremely large and gb needs to be removed. Why?
