Reliable if positive: If the result is positive 8 weeks after exposure, and it is confirmed with a western blot, it is reliable. A negative result for antibody or even viral nucleic acid, at that stage, does not rule out hiv, and the person needs to be retested. Please note that post-exposure treatment is available that may lessen the risk of HIV taking hold.
