Fungal disease: Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal disease that occurs in dry desert environments like the southwest U.S. You get it by breathing fungal particles from soil. The infection starts in the lungs but can spread to other parts of the body including the joints, skin, or lymph nodes. It can cause meningitis. Also known as "valley fever", it may go away on its own or need treatment with antifungal drugs.
