A member asked:

How do i explain to my 6 yr old neice what autism is?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Simple is best: Sometimes the simplest answer is the best, particularly when dealing with the curious or worried. Letting her know that some kids don't understand things as easily & act different is better than a full discussion. When she is 8-10 a bit more can be understood & by the teen years, a full adult like explanation is in order. The discussion must not exceed a kids ability to understand the issue.
