It's a package...: Basic answer is: controlling the blood sugar - with pills and or insulin. Target a1c is less than 7%. Other items - ace inhibitor/or arb w BP target less than 135/85, LDL cholesterol less than 100 (so this usually requires a statin like Crestor (rosuvastatin) or lipitor), and of course good nutrition and aerobic exercise. Make sure to see your pcp every 3-4 months for bloodwork, urine for protein, physical exam.
