Possibly: I would use the epidural to target the nerve that appears to be irritated based on your question. Annular tears can result in back pain, but epidurals may or may not help. Overall they are safe procedures and it would be worth a trial. Injections should be done one at a time and not in series without re-evaluation. They should not be done unless you have had a trial of physical therapy first.

Maybe: Epidurals are indicated for leg pain and not for back pain. They do however have anti-inflammatory properties and may calm down inflammation from an annular tear. They are safe and effective if done by the right person and may be worth a try if other measures are not working.

ESI: It sounds like you are experiencing radicular pain from a disc degeneration disease. I think you might benefit from epidural steroid injection. An epidural steroid injection is a minimally invasive procedure that delivers steroids via a needle directly into the epidural space to help reduce inflammation.
