Prob nl blood flow: Ultrasound is very sophisticated. It can actually get information from moving red blood cells in blood vessels. It uses something called the doppler effect to measure blood velocity. Arbitrarily, red is assigned to any flow towards the transducer, and blue for any flow away. Doppler effect is what makes a train whistle decrease in pitch as it passes in front of you at a railroad crossing.

Breast Ultrasound: Part of the examination usually includes an ultrasound Color Doppler evaluation, which is an assessment for the presence/absence and pattern of blood flow. This is displayed as blue or red on the screen depending on the direction of the blood flow. It does not necessarily imply anything abnormal.
