They already have it: Most of us carry hsv1 without any symptoms. If you have annoying cold sores, protect your lips & face from sun using sunscreen & sunscreen stick. Acyclovir & valacyclovir are effective if dosed immediatly at first tingling (prodrome) or as prophylaxis to prevent attacks. Topical Acyclovir and other creams are a waste of money.

Hard to tell...: HSV isn't very efficiently transmitted. Even after a lifelong marriage and regular sexual contact and kissing, many spouses of infected persons never catch it. Assuming genital HSV2, at age 50 shedding might be infrequent -- but there is at least some transmission risk. Oral HSV1 usually is transmitted only when there is an overt cold sore. Or your partner(s) could be infected without symptoms.
