Visit a doctor: There are many options when choosing antidepressants (ssris, snris, tricyclics), they vary in their effectiveness, side effects and cost. However, the most important thing to do is to visit your psychiatrist. They will be able to evaluate if you even need meds or whether there are any other psychiatric issues to address. Make to sure to ask them about side effects of any meds they rx for you.

Most are equal: Doctors choose antidepressants based on side-effect profiles, not superior effectiveness. Despite minor evidence that older tricyclics may be slightly more effective than more common ssris, it's best to consider antidepressants all equally effective. But for any one patient, one med can work much better than another. Thus, treatment must be tailored to the individual; adding therapy helps too.
