Risks and benefits: No one can responsibly give personal recommendation for otc or prescribed meds. Non-prescription offerings have weak at best effects, but ultimately are aimed at changing the brain chemistry. Otcs can be costly, but the risk of untreated severe ocd and depression can be grave for occupational, social, and work functioning, not to mention quality of life. Psychotherapy alone might not b enough.

Trial and error: If symptoms are that severe, the best response is combining psychotherapy with medication, at least initially to help u gain control.
