May not be found : One of the most common causes of low thyroid is hashimoto's thyroiditis. This is an autoimmune thyroid condition in which the body attacks the thyroid thinking it is foreign. This can shut down production of thyroid hormone. Testing for thyroid antibodies (thyroglobulin ab and thyroid peroxidase ab) can help determine if it is hashimoto's. Other causes are not as easily tested.
