Normal finding: The radiotracer used for bone scans ( 99mtc-mdp) is mainly excreted by the kidneys. Therefore, not seeing the kidneys would be abnormal. Kidneys are always seen on bone scans. Sometimes, kidney diseases are well detected on bone scan such as cysts, hydronephrosis, urinary obstruction.....

Usually normal: 50% of bone agent technetium 99m mdp is excreted normally on bone scan sometimes visualization of kidneys can coincidentally detect urinary tract obstructions, abnormally positioned kidneys, and cysts in kidneys. Sometimes kidneys do not show up on scan due to poor function.
