Anemic? Pregnant?: There are a few reasons to start someone on folate (folic acid). First is if they are deficient. This might show up as a type of anemia called macrocytic anemia. Once the anemia is discovered, a B12 and folate (folic acid) level are drawn to determine which deficiency is causing it. Another reason is if you plan to become pregnant or are pregnant as this prevents certain defects.

Deficiency: What were the results of the blood test? You may be deficient in folic acid. Taking folic acid, if you are not deficient in B12, will not do any harm.
