Soft toothbrush: You should always use a soft toothbrush unfortunately once the gums have receded they don't grow back they have been worn away by many factors be gentle but thorough in your brushing see a periodontist who can restore the lost gum tissues where necessary many times when the tooth roots are exposed you become sensitive to heat and/or cold.

Usually not: One thing to realize--if your gum is receding, what that really means is the supporting bone that was once there holding your gum up is going away. And that process can't be reversed by a toothbrush. Please see your dentist. There may be some corrective options available.
