ALS: Lou gehrig's disease, also called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (als), causes the nerve cells in certain regions of your brain and spinal cord to gradually die. Eventually, people who have lou gehrig's disease lose the ability to move their limbs and the muscles needed to move, eat, speak and breathe.

Textbook: A disease causing death of motor nerve cells, resulting in progressive limb weakness, muscle atrophy, and muscle fiber twitching called fasciculations. The tongue can flicker and atrophy, and swallowing and breathing can become malfunctional. There is no cure, and sole approved drug is Riluzole.
