Sometimes: Surgery is recommended for problems with recurrent infection from diverticulitis. Just having diverticulosis without infections is very common & does not benefit from surgery.

In that area.: Surgery for diverticulosis would eradicate the diverticuli that were in the removed portion of the colon, but wouldn't prevent you from forming new ones in the remaining colon.
