Depends: Arachnoid cysts are generally not life threatening but occasionally can enlarge and require surgical intervention. Chiari i malformations can be quite symptomatic and can rarely be life threatening (they are sometimes associated with syringomyelia). Chiari malformations warrant evaluation by a neurosurgeon.

Chiari - maybe: Arachnoid cysts are benign lesions. Chiari i malformations, in severe cases, can affect the function of nerves controlling taste, swallowing, tongue movement, shoulder movement. Swelling of the spinal cord can also occur, causing arm weakness and sensory changes. While these findings are not life threatening, they may produce enough dysfunction to increase the risk of falls, aspiration pneumonia.
