Excellent question: The issue of bipolar disorder in children is highly controversial. There is at least one published cases study of a boy 4 1/2 years old with what appeared to be clear bipolar disorder. However, current use of the term to refer to anyone with recurrent tantrums and mood lability has clouded the issue. Adult-type bd rarely appears before puberty, with a steady increase during adolescence.
