Bipolar: Manic depression is a mood disorder that presents with extreme highs & lows, with at least few weeks of manic phases (abnormally elevated mood & energy level) alternating with few or more weeks of depressed phases (sad, guilty, hopeless/helpless, changes in sleep/appetite/energy level). Any phase can be severe enough to experience delusions or hallucinations.

Two poles.: Bipolar disorder is a condition in which people have periods of either a very good or irritable mood (mania),  a depression mood, or a mixed state (a combination of depression and mania). The mood disorder questionaire (mdq) screens for many of the symptoms for mania and can be downloaded here: http://www.Psychtoolkit.Com/mood-disorder-questionnaire-mdq.Html.

Large mood swings,: Racing thoughts, increased irritability, grandiosity, increased multi-tasking, decreased need for sleep, increased sexual acting out, irresponsible spending, and increased impulsivity. Mood stabilizing medications such as lithium work well.

Manic depressive : Is another name for bipolar. At least one episode of mania is required by definition and includes decreased need for sleep, elevated self esteem, and sometimes grandiose delusions. Usually episodes of depression also occur with decreased sense of self worth and feelings of hopelessness which may include suicidal ideation. These episodes are usually separated by weeks, months, or even yearss.

Bipolar: Bipolar I and bipolar II, In the first, manic phases are more severe, and in the second, depressive phases are more severe. There is also cyclothymia which is a low grade version of bipolar disorder in general, where mood swings are not as severe in either direction, manic or depressive.
