Genetic disease: Sickle cell disease means the patient inherited the gene for sickle cell disease from both mother and father. The disease is associated with anemia (low blood) and often some degree of jaundice (yellowness.) people with this problem are more likely to be ill with infections early in life and take antibiotics and receive special vaccinations, to help prevent infections.

Sickle cell disease: Genetic condition where the body makes stiff, sticky sickle-shaped red blood cells (rbc) instead of the flexible disk-shaped ones due to abnormal hemoglobin s. Sickle-shaped rbc get stuck in blood vessels interrupting blood flow & delivery of oxygen & food to organs, which causes pain, fatigue, organ damage and increases risk of infection. No cure but treatments are available. See hematologist.
