5 lbs weight loss: In one week is dangerous. You should strive for about 2 pounds per week for a healthy and sustainable weight loss. Depending on your caloric needs now (what your body burns based on job, lifestyle, and activity--everybody is different), you should reduce intake by about 10% and increase (or start) exercise as well. Gradual loss is healthy; rapid loss is not, and cannot be maintained either!

No: Counting calories is not necessary to live a healthy lifestyle. More important is to get daily exercise of at least 30 minutes and eating in a healthy manner. This would include eating more fruits and vegetables, less processed foods, less saturated fats, more unsaturated fats, less simple carbohydrates and more complex carbohydrates.

It is not exact: Counting calories is not necessary and is definitely not exact. It's only an estimation of the calories you consume. You can continue counting, but have greater focus on eating healthy: more fruits and vegetables, less processed foods, less saturated fats and simple carbohydrates, and more unsaturated fats and complex carbohydrates. And most importantly, exercise for at least 30 min/day.

"food" calorie= kcal: Food energy is expressed in food calories ("kcal" in france and the e.U.; "cal" in the U.S.) or in kilojoules (kj). Food calories are 1000 times the energy of scientific calories, known also as calories (makes things confusing!). On nutrition labels, calories means food calories or kcal. 1 food calorie = 1 kcal = 4.2 kj. Some european food labels show kcal and kj amounts.
