A 36-year-old member asked:

How can I tell the difference between my moods being just my hormones or something more serious?

Watch the timing: If your mood gets "bad" post ovulation, about 2 weeks into your cycle, or later and gets better as soon as your period starts. It may be hormonal. Keeping a healthy diet and exercising can help alot. If you are a candidate, birth control pills often help with pms. Even if it is "just pms" it can be debilitating. You should see your doctor for treatment.

Estrogen decreases: Estrogen is an important hormone in both women and men. In women, it is produced by the ovary as long as ovulation is occurring, but after menopause (average age 52), this stops. The ovary still produces testosterone, as does the male testes, and this can be converted to estrogen, but in many persons, the production of testosterone also drops after age 75.

Anxiety & hormones: Hormonal imbalance, especially in women, especially near menopause where levels of Progesterone drop. Progesterone is similar to serotonin & has a calming effect. This can be compounded by elevated levels of oestrogen, or use of birth control pill.

Dr. Michael Swor

It's not: Many women can safely use menopausal hormonal therapy as they age, even beyond 80. A thorough and thoughtful evaluation by a women's health specialist is recommended.
