The suprapubic catheter is usually changed by a healthcare personnel in the US. I do not know what the protocol in Canada is. However, if you are allowed to insert suprapubic catheter then you should be trained thoroughly. In the US, only are patients trained to do self uretheral catheterization (straight cath).

Pigtail SP catheter is generally changed by a trained healthcare worker. A foley catheter can be changed by a lay person with just a little bit of instructions. The reason is that the curl of the pigtail has to be straightened out to insert it. A foley does not require that
