A member asked:

If in a coma and on ventilater can outside air get in? also if chest needle is used, syringe is used can air from room get in? i visited such a person ancoughed. could germs get into ventilater or thru chest tube when taking out fluid? i feel guilt?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The airways are in a closed system when on a ventilator and germs in the air don't get into the lungs. A health professional will not allow room air enter a syringe and during removal of fluid from the chest cavity, there is also a closed system as fluid is aspirated through tubing into a jug.
