A member asked:

My 92 year old mother recently was treated for shingles on her jaw line. 2 days ago her ear began bleeding on the same side of her head where she had shingles. what could be causing the bleeding?

If the blood is coming from inside ear she needs to be seen immediately ER/ urgent care/ her doc. If from the outside then it is from a lesion of the shingles blister- have your doc check it. Hope she does well.

The connection between her diagnosis and symptoms including ear bleeding would be shingles involving the ear canal described in the literature as Ramsay Hunt syndrome, with vesicles or blisters near the ear and in the auditory canal. Other unrelated causes cannot be ruled out.
